Project Overview

The works consisted of full encapsulation, abrasive blasting and re-coating of the radar tower structure.

The works covered the supply of two unrelated ablutions blocks at RAAF Base Darwin: one within Transit Camp 2 (ie. “Tin City”); and the other adjacent to a training room recovered from IDC Berrimah.

Challenges

  • Radar Tower
    • Complex scaffolding including offset standards and cantilevered platforms above 20m required to access the tower structure
    • Pressurisation of the pedestal (lube) room to eliminate ingress of grid dust and grains
    • Care around operating RADAR waveguide
    • Maintaining maintenance access for RAAF RADAR technicians
    • Managing RADHAZ while working just below the radome itself
  • Ablutions
    • Implementing PWD within the existing site layout including maintain required clearances
    • Relocate a working fire panel without an outage

Successes

  • No LTIs
  • No impacts to air traffic control operations
  • Delivered PWD enabled facilities at RAAF Base Darwin
