Remote North Fencing

Project Overview

Works involve civil works to the perimeter track and maintenance to the fence at RAAF Base Scherger.

• Implementation of erosion and sediment control measures
• Minor local earthworks and reshaping of perimeter tracks
• Ground surface treatment and subgrade preparation
• Pavement works
• Repairs to degraded sections of perimeter fence
• Replacement of damaged sections of perimeter fence
• Realignment of existing perimeter fence

Challenges

• Remote location of the site – logistics, materials had to be sourced from as far away as Brisbane
• Ground conditions along the fence line and creeks with water-logged areas posing construction difficulties
• Monsoonal weather events
• Interactions between mobile plant and people
• Working within a mine lease
• Ongoing damage by feral animals during construction works

Successes

• Indigenous employment on this project was 80%, with workforce recruited from Traditional Owner businesses
• Project completed before target completion date and under budget
• No defects
• No LTI’s
• All earthmoving equipment and labour provided by local businesses including traditional owner businessess
